Gilliam studied Modern Culture and Media at Brown, followed by an MFA in Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After receiving her MFA, Gilliam began to pursue an academic career while making her own art, and had multimedia pieces exhibited at places like the Whitney and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. She then got a second masters at NYU in Game and Interactive Media design, and went on to work at New York’s Institute of Play, where she launched the game-based-learning public school Quest to Learn. Gilliam then directed Mozilla’s Hive NYC Learning Network before taking on her current role at Girls Who Code. Gilliam has channeled her lifelong fascination with systems and the way things work into a diverse career at the intersection of art, learning, and technology, and she fills us in on just how she did it — and how you can, too.
